ISO 10006 provides guidance for the application of a quality management system in projects. The implementation of ISO 10006 is applicable to organizations working on complex projects, large or small, short or long term, in a variety of environments. This standard is implemented with the aim of achieving project objectives by introducing a quality management system in projects, regardless of the type of product, service or process involved. ISO 10006 is not a guide to project management itself, but rather provides guidance on quality in project management processes. The guidance required for project management and related processes is included in ISO 21500.
What is ISO 10006?
ISO 10006 is concerned with the concepts of a quality management system in projects. The issues related to a quality management system in projects are distinguished separately according to different cases. The purpose of ISO 10006 is to provide guidance on the application of project quality management. This document provides an outline of the principles and procedures for quality management that are important to implement and that have a significant impact on achieving quality objectives in projects. The guidelines of this standard are designed for a wide range of audiences and are applicable to a variety of projects, from small to large, simple to complex, stand-alone projects to projects that are part of a program or portfolio of projects.
Application of a quality management system in projects
The application of a quality management system in projects has two recognized aspects: one is the project processes and the other is the project product. Failure to meet either of these two aspects will have very significant effects on the project product, its customer, other stakeholders and the project organization. In ISO 10006, achieving quality objectives is the responsibility of the organization’s top management and requires a commitment to achieving quality objectives to permeate all levels of the organization involved in the project. Of course, each level must maintain responsibility for the processes and products of its activities.
